Exploring Unconventional Forms

CLO3D OFF-AVATAR TOOLS / DIGITAL PROTOTYPING / PATTERN DEVELOPMENT / DIGITAL → PHYSICAL

An independent study using CLO3D's off-avatar tools to build unconventional forms, then translating the digital prototypes toward physical ones and documenting what changes.

RESEARCH QUESTION

What happens to a form built off the avatar in CLO3D when it is translated into a physical prototype?

THE STUDY

An independent study investigating CLO3D's off-avatar tools as a way to build forms that do not start from a body block, and using CLO as a fast 3D prototyping space for them.

The second half of the study moves the digital prototypes toward physical ones and records what shifts in that translation. Everything on this page is working documentation, not a final result.

FORM 01 — SCULPTURAL SLEEVE

DIGITAL PROTOTYPE

A fitted bodysuit base with oversized, angular sleeves built off the avatar.

01 OFF-AVATAR 3D PEN

Construction lines and points placed around the shoulder and upper arm to define the sleeve volume.

FORM 02 — WINGED SHOULDER + FLARED HIP

DIGITAL PROTOTYPE

Flared, layered forms standing away from the shoulders and hips.

01 OFF-AVATAR 3D PEN

Looping curves drawn out from the shoulder, and lines projected from the hip, to set where the forms leave the body.

DIGITAL → PHYSICAL

The next stage takes these patterns off the screen. Physical tests will be documented here as they are made, alongside the digital prototype they came from.

DIGITAL PROTOTYPE

Form two digital prototype.

PHYSICAL TEST

PHYSICAL TESTIN PROGRESSDocumentation will be added once the physical prototype is made.

CURRENT OBSERVATIONS

OBSERVATIONS WILL BE PUBLISHED AS THE PHYSICAL TESTS ARE COMPLETED.

NEXT STEPS

  • Translate the digital prototypes into physical prototypes.
  • Document what changes between the CLO form and the physical form.
  • Revise the patterns in response, and repeat.
